Rainbows, Fall is Coming, and I Have to Do Something Awful
Greetings, fellow homesteaders!
I don’t know about you, but after the incredibly hot temperatures we have had, I am ready for fall! It’s my favorite season of the year! We’ve started posting some fall recipes on the blog with lots more to come!
I picked up pork at Costco (I try to buy in bulk to save money where I can!). Check out these pork recipes with more to come!

Fall also means lots of activities! We have three in sports this year. We are down one because he moved away to college (sad mama). But it’s always good to have some easy, healthy snacks on hand as they breeze through the house on their way to practice, work, the skate park, or where ever else busy teenagers go! These are also great for appetizers or for smaller kid meals (or adult meals. I eat these for lunch a lot!)

As always, if you have a recipe request or a recipe you would like to share, just drop me a line at [email protected]. We appreciate everyone who takes the time to leave a 5-star review for our recipes!
If you haven’t been reading David John’s Nature Notes, you are really missing out! Each week he gives us some insight into one aspect of nature. This week, it is talking about rainbows, sundogs, and Mammatus Clouds.

Have you been on TikTok lately? It seems like countertop ice makers are the hot thing right now. I do love having one over the summer. I make a batch of ice and take it out with me to drop in all the waterers around the homestead to keep the water cool.
To help cut down on the sheer number of choices, we tested out quite a few and here are our favorites.

What’s so awful?
I’m going to be butchering chickens for the first time. We’ve been pretty lucky with our chickens so far and only ended up with one accidental roo. Our flock usually has two roos, the one we call The Dude, and Harley, our little brown silky. This year, we ended up with 5 more accidental roosters!
If you don’t know my story yet, I grew up a city girl. Ryan was the one who grew up on a homestead. We started homesteading at our old place not long after we met. Two years ago, we had the opportunity to move to our dream home and property and started all over. I LOVE homesteading and this lifestyle. But, I’ve never had to dispatch anything but fish. This is just part of the life. Those roos will provide food for my family, and I thank them for that. I just can’t continue to have 7 roos in the coop! It’s mayhem!
I’ll be posting about the experience and what I learn from the mentors helping me and my experience.

This week’s reader tip is from Jonnah L. - I love planting dark leafy greens, radishes, and carrots in August. They are great fall veggies!
